When you finally eat fried goat meat in Narok you will understand why I always say we should respect goats whether they are alive or cooked on your plate. The best way to enjoy fried goat meat is with ugali cooked by a good African woman. Do not even think about eating it with rice chapati potatoes or githeri because those do not go well together.
It will probably be around eight in the evening and you will be tired and hungry after a long trip through many towns. You might have passed Eldoret Kapsabet Nandi Hills Kericho and Bomet before you arrive in Narok. You will know you are in Narok when you see many cows grazing and large wheat farms. You will have left behind the maize farms in Bomet and the tea plantations in Kericho.
Because you are hungry you will not care about visiting Narok Museum or noticing the Maasai Morans walking around town. Most of those Morans are actually business people from places like Nyeri or Muranga pretending to be Maasai. The real Morans are probably deep in the villages outside town.
So what will matter most? The answer is simple. Food. You will look for a hotel that has a butchery and serves good goat meat. These hotels take goat meat seriously and will serve you tender delicious meat. You do not want to eat tough meat that makes you wonder if you are chewing crocodile from the Mara River.
I was there a few months ago with friends after working hard teaching students who did very well. We were rewarded with a trip to Maasai Mara but my main focus in Narok was the goat meat. At our table was also a hardworking girl from Maasai Mara University or University of Maasai Mara . I hope they do not mind how people call their school unlike Nairobi University students who always want to be called The University of Nairobi.
Back to the food. The fried goat meat and ugali arrived served by a respectable woman. I am sure the ugali and meat were cooked by a good woman because they tasted so good that I forgot the name of the hotel.
They say humans have five senses but when you taste fried goat meat in Narok it feels like you get a sixth sense. Your nose your ears and even your third eye open up. Your mouth waters like never before ready to enjoy every bite and help it slide down your throat. You even find yourself not talking with your mouth full because Narok goat meat demands your full attention.
After you finish every bite wash it down with sweet blended fruit juice made from different fruits and your life will never be the same again.
